TEAM NEWTON/KELLER QUAILIFY FOR REDFISH CUP CHAMPIONSHIP IN PENSACOLA (no replies)

BILOXI/D’IBERVILLE, Miss; September 3, 2009 -- Trey Newton and Al Keller slid into the ESPN Redfish Cup Championship despite their boat sinking in the ESPN Biloxi event. After a “0” weigh in on day 1, the team rallied day 2 in a secondary boat and did well enough to finish the year in 17th place overall (down from 5th place overall prior to the event).

The rigors of the Redfish Cup took the toll on the team when a replaceable livewell pump popped off and filled their Lake and Bay with water. Newton (Valrico, FL) was able to navigate the boat to the shoreline in Lake Bourne. Sadly, this maneuver was not completed before the back end of the boat completely sunk.

“A ¼ inch long crack in the pump housing was all that it took to take us out of the running for team of the year,” said Newton after the event.

The team discovered water in the bottom of the boat upon entering Lake Bourne and immediately headed for land. Unfortunately the closest piece of land had a near 4 foot drop off and the back of the boat went to the bottom. Had the event happened just 5 minutes earlier, the team would have been too far out in the open water and may have been floating in open water sending a 911 message on their SPOT personal locator.

“This was a huge blow to us, I felt ill the entire day,” said Keller (Naples, FL), “All of the work we had put into prefishing went to the bottom with the boat.”

On day 2, they fished with their 16 foot poling skiff that they use for a scout boat, but this impeded them the ability to get to the area Newton/Keller had prefished all week. “Putting the boat on the trailer and not finishing a tournament was not an option. Zeroing for a day in a tournament that you can get to Louisiana from is a sentence for a last place finish. We owed it to ourselves, our families, our sponsors, and the tour to finish out the tournament. We never even discussed leaving.” Fishing within sight of the launch, Team Newton/Keller was able to manage a respectable 14.58 pounds which placed them 48th out of 56 teams for the Biloxi event.

During prefishing, the team had put together a pattern in which they had extreme confidence. “We knew that the fish were staging in drains off of broken marsh areas near main byways getting ready for their full moon spawn. The fish were keyed in on the Mirrolure Top Dog and Top Dog Jr. in the Chartreuse/Silver color. As the day went on we switched to either a crab pattern or the Mirrolure 4” shad in the Chicken on a Chain color on a ¼ ounce Bass Assassin jig head. As prefishing went on, the bite was slower and we switched to the Reaction Innovations Skinny Dipper in the Money Shot color for the floating fish,” said Newton.

Biloxi was the final regular season stop on the Redfish Cup. The final event of the season is the Redfish Cup Championship, set for September 25-27 in Pensacola, FL where the top 20 teams after the four regular season event qualified and will battle it out later this month. The Redfish Cup is also featured on RedfishCup.com and ESPNOutdoors.com at every event during the season. Now in its seventh season, the Redfish Cup has become the nation’s premier saltwater fishing championship. The event includes 56 two-man teams and visits five venues across the South in 2009 with nearly $750,000 in prize and contingency monies.
News Release: Hall Em In Lures 2010 Inshore Series

Orlando, FL (September 9, 2009): HallEmIn Lures announces the 2010 Inshore Series line of lures. For 2010, Hall Em In Lures has 5 new models to the line.

The inshore series is what started Hall Em In Lures in the custom lure business. Dave & Fred Hall wanted to use their woodworking skills to design and use a high-quality, functional wood lure. After thorough testing of several different types of wood and lure shapes, they decided on using Spanish Cedar wood that is painted and covered with 3 coats of epoxy for an extremely durable finish. The Inshore Series uses stainless screw eyes that are glued and screwed into the lure along with stainless steel cup washers and VMC Black Nickel 6x hooks. Custom streamers are available on the tail hooks to match lure colors. The Inshore Series is available in 15 color patterns or custom colored for any angler upon order.
Boca Bite- Boca Bite is either a topwater or a sub-surface suspension lure that will stay on the surface with a “walk the dog” action or run 6 inches to 1 foot under the surface. The Boca Bite is available in 3-1/2 inches or it is available custom ordered from 3-5 inches. The Boca Bite is an excellent lure for most saltwater inshore species and is available with or without rattles.

Bustin Bob- Bustin Bob is similar to the old style topwater popper plugs. This is a topwater commotion lure with a side to side action. Hall Em In started out only making a few of these for close friends and they quickly became very popular, catching large Snook and Trout. The Bustin Bob is available in 3 ½ & 3 ¾ inch lengths and with or without rattles to attract different gamefish.

Chokoloskee Chomp- Aka, “Choko Chomp”, this lure is named after our very favorite fishing area down in the Everglades National Park. The action on this underwater lure is one of the best ever seen. The faster you reel or troll this lure, the deeper it goes and produces a wide side-to-side sweeping action that triggers aggressive strikes from gamefish. Choko Chomp is available in 3 ¼, 3 ½ & 4 inch lengths as a custom order.

Poon Plug- Large torpedo-shaped lure made primarily for tarpon. This is another custom lure that is not stocked, but made to order. Spanish Cedar can be used for topwater action or Cherry wood for sub-surface action. Weights can be added for a slower rise when paused. The Poon Plug is available in 5 inches using 1/O VMC 6X hooks in Black Nickel and 7 inches using 2/O VMC 6X hooks in Black Nickel.

Ripper-The Ripper is a very unique hand-carved lure that is time-consuming to produce. After two years of testing and tweaking the design, Hall Em In came up with the perfect shape, matched with fantastic action in a sub-surface lure. This is an original patent-pending lure, and has become our most popular lure. The Ripper is available in 3 ¼ & 3 ¾ inch lengths and is available by custom order only.

New Models for 2010

Peanut-The Peanut is a smaller version of the Boca Bite. The Peanut touts a tapered design a weight and shape that allows anglers to cast long distances to reach fish without spooking. The Peanut is either a topwater or a sub-surface suspension lure that runs 6 inches to 1 foot under the surface. The Peanut is available in 3 inch & 3 ¼ inch lengths with the 3 ¼ inch lure available with rattles.

B29 Bomber-The B-29 Bomber has a round body that has a fast taper in the last inch of the lure. The B29 is strictly a topwater lure that comes standard with rattles and a “walk the dog” action. The B29 Bomber is one of the easiest baits to learn how to master the “walk the dog” action. The Bomber is available in 3 ½ inch and 3 ¾ inch lengths.
DA Darter-As the name implys, the DA Darter has an erratic side to side action on a steady retrieve or with a twitch of the rod. The DA darter runs 2-3 feet deep with a slow rise when paused on a retrieve. The DA Darter is available in 3 ½ & 3 ¾ inch versions and is available by custom order only.

Wiggler-The Wiggler is a new design that has a tight wobble on a slow, steady retrieve. The Wiggler runs 1-2 feet deep. The Wiggler has been a great plug for big Trout and Redfish. It is available in 3 ½ and 3 ¾ inch lengths.

Miller Marauder-Miller Marauder is a subsurface lure that has a tight wobble on a medium retrieve. The lure tracks straight while the tail of the lure wobbles to attract gamefish. The Miller Maurader runs 6 inches to 2 feet deep. It is available in 3 ½ & 3 ¾ inch lengths.

The Inshore Series line of Hall Em In Lures can be seen and purchased at the upcoming Florida Sportsman Shows this fall or by visiting the Hall Em In Lures website www.halleminlures.com.

TEAM NEWTON/KELLER FINISH 10TH AT CHALMETTE LA, LEG OF REDFISH CUP; RISES TO 5th IN OVERALL STANDINGS (no replies)

Chalmette, LA; August 3, 2009 -- The Redfish Cup team of Trey Newton & Al Keller landed a total of 29.17 lbs of redfish to finish 10th in the tournament in Chalmette, LA., less than 2 lbs out of first place. This second top 10 finish continues Newton/Keller’s rise in the team of the year standings and puts them in 5th place overall.

The team’s tournament nearly ended in disappointment when they realized they had left their measuring board in the truck on Day 1 of the tournament. The slot limit is from 16 to 27 inches in Louisiana and any fish not in this slot are disqualified from the weigh in. Ingenuity and a little luck were on their side when Keller (Naples, FL) proposed the use of a dollar bill to measure the fish, “I knew a dollar was just shy of 6 1/8 inches in length so I measured it out on the deck and drew a line with a Sharpie pen.” Early in the day the team caught a perfect fish that was nearly eight pounds but sweated the measurement all the way to the measuring station. “We considered throwing the fish back but I really thought it was going to be there. I have never been so nervous in the weigh-in line,” said Newton (Valrico, FL).

One change the team made for this tournament was a new arrangement on the front of their Lake & Bay boat. By putting two casting platforms on the deck with the back one just a bit higher than the front, it allowed them to work seamlessly with each other in communication & casting. The decision to run their Lake & Bay (vs. their smaller boat), got them to their fishing area twice as fast as the smaller boats netting an extra hour of fishing time. On Day 2, the team went through a pretty big squall to get back to weigh-in – the size & speed of the Lake & Bay got them to the dock safely.

Another key to the team’s success in Chalmette was their bait approach. The team used the Reactions Innovations Skinny Dipper, which proved to be an excellent bait in the Louisiana Marsh. Newton said, “The California 420 color rigged weightless with a 5/0 Owner screw lock hook worked great. The bait could be reeled across the top like a frog or could be dropped in front of cruising fish like a swim bait.” The team also found that another key to this bait was the weight of the soft plastic bait was heavy enough to be used with a baitcaster, which was important when cranking the fish out of the vegetation.

“All in all we were really proud of the tournament and the decisions we made. I think we maximized the weight that was possible in the area that we fished,” Keller said.

Chalmette is the third stop on the Redfish Cup circuit and the anglers are past the halfway mark for the coveted Academy Team of the Year presented by Crocs race. The Chalmette tournament will be broadcast on ESPN2 Saturday, Aug. 8 at 8:30 a.m. EDT.
