TFO Mini Magnum 7/8 weight Review (no replies)

I f you guys are looking for a really nice fly rod and reel combo here it is. It's called a mini Magnum by TFO. Had a chance to talk to the owner at ICAST about this combo and WOW. SO I had a chance to fish with it the other day and it is a nice piece of equipment and the bang for your buck. Here is a little info about it.

The Mini Magnum now has a little brother as TFO adds a 6/8 weight (200-300 grains) to the mix. Like its big brother, the Mini Mag 6/8 is not to exceed 8’, keeping it “legal” for many tournament fishing circuits. Equally at home in both fresh and salt water, Mini Mags are constructed with a hybrid combination of S-Glass and high-modulus carbon fiber for exceptional lifting power and casting ability. So go ahead and throw your favorite pattern into the junk, once eaten there’s enough butt strength to ripbronze backs out of the rock quarry or wrestle linesiders away from the dock pilings.

Mini Magnum rods are not just powerful fishing tools; the polished blue marble finish makes these 3 piece rods a stunning piece of equipment topped with over sized stripping and snake guides. The up-locking reel seat features a cushioned channel that is set in a flor grade full wells cork grip with a large comfortable fighting butt. Suggested retail is $199.95.

Mini Mag kits (available mid-July) will include a TFO Prism CLA reel (7/8 or 9/11) rigged with a fly line (8 or 10 wt. line), leader and backing all packed neatly in a rod and reel carrying case. Suggested retail is $299.95.

I will be some follow up stores and testimonials from my teen anglers and more. Will be posting more stores and pics on this nice combo from TFO. Check out the TFO stores in Florida near you and pick your self out a new combo from TFO

Okay, here's how you pick a rod for the ages....all ages. (no replies)

"I want a fast action rod that's not too stiff..." WOW! There's a fella who knows exactly what he wants in a fly rod. For most, however, it's just not that easy when you are trying to spend your hard earned money wisely.

How well a rod will cast and fight fish in a particular environment is key, so a bit about rod actions and casting characteristics is worthwhile. The action of a rod is determined by where it bends with a given amount of weight. Fast action rods bend nearer the tip area and medium action rods bend down nearer the middle of the rod. Slower action rods bend all the way down into the butt section and look parabolic when bent with that same given amount of weight. All you really need to know is that faster action rods are stiff in the butt and flexible in the tip, because you will use a great range of weight when you cast varying distances or when using larger/heavier flies.

Let's take a 6 wt. fly rod as an example. Per AFFTA, our industry organization's standard for the first 30' of a 6 weight flyline is 160 grains, or about 3/8 ounce. But if you are casting with half that much or 15' of flyline (80 grains) - the AFFTA 30' weight standard say 80 grains is a 2 weight! Or, let's say you are a pretty good distance caster and you need your 6 weight to carry 70' of line to shoot a presentation cast to 100'. We know that the first 30' of our 6 weight line weighs 160 grains, but running line - at approximately 3 grains per foot - weighs another 120 grains (40' x 3 grain/foot) for a total weight of 280 grains of flyline - AFFTA 30' standards say 280 grains is a 10 weight! As Lefty says "all flyrods are a compromise". The need from tip to butt in Medium Fast, Fast and Very Fast Actions....pick what suits your casting style, or if you are just learning, pick an action based on the distance you plan to cast.

Personally, we think the best advice is that it's just fishing....so pick a rod, get in the sport and go have some fun. We'll be here to help if you have any questions.
Welcome to Temple Fork Outfitters,

We have been in the fly fishing business a long time. After introducing our original "Killer Caddis" (Trademark) glass beads and our flies and tying tools, and telling all our friends that we were in the flyfishing business ... their first question was typically "That's great ! Whose rods do you carry?" We can now say "Our Own!"

Armed with a lifetime passion for flyfishing, we set out to establish a new standard of value for fly rods. We have relied on our own experience and advice of many professionals in creating what we believe is the perfect marriage - price and performance. Sound too good to be true? Cast one and you be the judge.

"Lifetime Warranties" on fly rods are worth little for rods that stay in the closet, and they are definitely a poor substitute for fly rod performance. For some of you, ours might be your only rod, and for others who might be adding to a portfolio of rods, we expect ours to become a favorite.

Temple Fork Outfitters rods prefer to spend their time fishing, and thus face a greater odds of breakage. Our NO FAULT LIFETIME WARRANTY will repair or replace your rod for a reasonable shipping and handling charge for the life of the registered owner.
